Drop-In Communicators: When the Uninvited Speak

Mar 01, 2026

There’s a type of spirit communication that doesn’t get talked about very often — mostly because it doesn’t happen on our terms.  And we all so much like to be in control and truthfully most of the time when we work with Spirit we absolutely are (yes, I know there are exceptions!).

Drop-in communicators are spirits who arrive without invitation, without a clear connection to the sitter, and sometimes without any immediate context at all. They don’t wait to be called. They don’t check in politely. They simply show up.  Like HEYYYYY!!!

And that alone can be unsettling — even for experienced mediums.  For me it is happening more and more and I am learning what that all means for me and I will share that soon enough!

When a drop-in communicator comes through, the information doesn’t always land neatly. Names don’t make sense. Memories feel disconnected. Emotions come through that don’t belong to the person sitting in front of you. As a medium, you may find yourself holding pieces that don’t assemble right away.  Your Spirit Team is like "What the...."

This is often where confusion creeps in.

Skeptics tend to argue that these experiences are creations of the unconscious mind — fragments of imagination or internal symbolism. And while not every drop-in experience is clear or verifiable, many psychical researchers and practitioners believe some of these communications are genuine encounters with spirit consciousness, not psychological projections.  I KNOW it is.  I know it because this is becoming lived experience!

What makes drop-in communication especially fascinating is that sometimes it carries information the medium could not have known (again I know that evidential mediumship is exactly that just wait....), or details that are later confirmed through research, records, or a small circle of people connected to the spirit. In rarer cases, drop-ins have been accompanied by physical sensations or phenomena — unexplained sounds, shifts in the room, unusual smells, or strong emotional atmospheres.  OH!  I think we need to talk about apports....Squirrel....

But not all drop-ins are dramatic.

Some are simply persistent.

One of the things I’ve noticed over the years is that drop-in communicators often seem to have a purpose. They’re not always looking to comfort or reassure. Sometimes they’re trying to complete something unfinished, to be acknowledged, or to have a message carried forward.  I have always said that Spirit doesn't just drop in to say hi.  For a medium to showcase their ability to connect.  Spirit always has a purpose for popping in and it is part of our contract with Spirit to relay the messages whether they land or not.

And here’s the part people don’t always realize — as a medium, you don’t always understand the purpose right away.

That doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.

It means discernment matters.

Drop-in communication requires grounding, boundaries, and the ability to sit with uncertainty without panic or ego. Not every message is meant to be solved in the moment. Not every spirit is meant to stay. And not every experience needs to be forced into meaning.  Amen!

Understanding drop-ins isn’t about fear — it’s about respect. Respect for the complexity of spirit communication and for the responsibility that comes with being open.

Spirit doesn’t always wait for an invitation lol.

Sometimes it simply needs a voice — and it’s up to us to decide how, when, and whether we allow that conversation to continue.  Hard stop!
